Heel veel kinderen in Gambia gaan niet naar school omdat de ouders het schoolgeld niet kunnen betalen. Voor de lagere school is het schoolgeld ongeveer € 100,- per jaar excl. uniform, schooltas en schoenen. Bij elkaar kost het ca. € 140,-. Het gemiddelde inkomen ligt op € 40,- per maand. Naar school gaan is dus erg duur. Wie het niet (meer) kan betalen wordt van school gestuurd.
De regering betaald sinds een paar jaar het schoolgeld voor de meisjes van de lagere school. Maar meisjes worden al heel jong ingezet als oppas, of voor huishoudelijk werk en gaan daarom vaak ook niet naar school.
Als één persoon van het gezin door leren een betere baan krijgt, kan deze het schoolgeld voor broertjes en zusjes betalen.
