De in 2004 opgerichte Stichting Painted Dog Conservation heeft als doel door middel van actie, voorlichting en onderzoek de Afrikaanse wilde hond te beschermen. Dit is hard nodig aangezien deze unieke diersoort met uitsterven wordt bedreigd. Liepen er honderd jaar geleden nog 500.000 wilde honden door Afrika, vandaag de dag zijn dat er nog maar 5000-8000.
